Chapter 13

Deadly Crimes

“STRENGTHEN THE SHIELDS. THEY’RE coming.” Maddox drags me with him, not giving me a chance to think, move, or even react. “I’ll take Nova. They’re going to hit hard and fast.”

“I’ll summon the guards.” Tiernan bursts into his dragon form and launches from the balcony, soaring away.

“Ambrose, shield the Drekis. The High Council can’t know they’re here. I doubt the witch managed to send notice of their appearance.” Theo rushes beside Maddox. “Let me care for her. I’ll protect her with my life and will not let them take her. Please, our mate needs you hidden and safe.”

I expect Maddox to argue, but he growls and kisses me, tossing me to Theo. My body relaxes in his arms, and I lie limply, my body in shock. I killed the councilwoman. I can’t believe I did that. I just—fuck, I’m a murderer. I’m living up to the Drekis fears about me when we first met.

“You did what you thought was necessary,” Theo says, adjusting me in his arms. “That’s what makes you a great ruler. Do not give those who try to hurt you and rip apart our clan even an ounce of sorrow or regret. I wouldn’t have you any other way.”

Still, I don’t respond. I can’t.

The raging beast inside me still wants to burn the world down. The witch set me off, and I can’t pull my dragon out of fighting mode. In a moment I should run and hide, my heart wants to stand up for myself. I want to face those who seek to destroy my world—a world that I seem to never get a chance to fully embrace.

“Fuck, they’ve gotten to the guards. They were already here. They’re trying to sever the growing alliance.” Tiernan’s voice booms through my mind as he lands, shaking the room. “We’re going to have to fight alone.”

My whole body tenses. They can’t fight the High Council. They’ll be slaughtered.

Shoving my hands to Theo’s chest, I push myself away and flip from his arms, landing on my feet. He growls, trying to snatch me up, but I scramble out of his way. If I leave with him, the High Council will destroy the place. They will destroy the Dragon Lands. I don’t have to ask anyone to know the truth in my soul.

“Delphia, come back here!” Theo shouts, rushing behind me. “Ambrose, stop her!”

I spin and hold my hands up. “No! I won’t let you hide me away and risk your lives. I won’t risk them destroying the other clans. I’m a criminal. I killed people.”

“Kitten, please. You can’t. If you do—” Bright green light cuts off Kash’s words as Ambrose casts a shield hiding the Drekis from sight.

Everything happens so fast that I freeze in my spot as brilliant blue light explodes through the room. Several figures materialize within the portal, and my dragon screams inside me to shoot my fire at them.

“Stand down, warlock,” a man snaps, dressed in a familiar CO uniform that I just got used to the Drekis not wearing.
